NoteworthyNotes: The Wedding Invitation: Men Do It, Too!
October 2006 |
 |
You hear a lot these days about how grooms-to-be are more involved in planning their weddings than ever before. But did you know that involvement extends even to choosing the perfect invitation – the traditional, longstanding bailiwick of brides-to-be?
"More men than I ever would have imagined want to be a part of every step in the wedding invitation process, starting with save-the-date cards," says Jay Rudman, partner in the distinctive Chicago-based stationery and gift retailer known simply as Noteworthy.
"While the task of choosing invitations for weddings and other such major events has traditionally fallen to the woman, we're finding that more and more men are as closely involved in the selection process as women," says Jay's wife Cindy Rudman, co-founder and president of Chicago-based Noteworthy LLC, parent company of Noteworthy. "The right invitation sets the tone for the entire event – and today's grooms know how important it is that their wedding invitations reflect their personalities, as well as the brides'. "
We're very cognizant of this shift at Noteworthy," Cindy explains, "which is why Noteworthy's invitation selection process is as comfortable and enjoyable for grooms as it is for brides." The brick-and-mortar store, located in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood near North & Sheffield Avenues, is augmented by two online stores, NoteworthyNotes.com and its sister site, NoteworthyGifts.com, each of which offers complementary Noteworthy merchandise.
"If your wedding will be on the casual side, the invitation should reflect this to assure that your guests wear appropriate attire and be in the right frame of mind," says Cindy Rudman. "The reverse is true as well: if you're planning a very elaborate wedding, sending a plain white invitation doesn't put the right picture in your guests' minds – it just does not reflect the day."
"Our wedding guests were not only close friends but business colleagues, so it was important that their initial perception of the event – the save-the-date card and invitation – presented the right image," says Joseph Yanez, who selected both items from Noteworthy with then-fiancée Karen Pfleiderer. The couple went for an elegant, classy look – silver lettering on a light-blue background – which Yanez, a global strategist for a chemical corporation, says conveyed the perfect impression of himself and Pfleiderer, a global financial analyst, as well as framing their nuptials as a can't-miss event.
"Noteworthy has a great selection," says Yanez, "and they're known for very quick and efficient turnaround."
Phil Weiss, who was as actively involved in selecting invitations for his 2005 wedding as was his wife Jill, is equally enthusiastic about Noteworthy. "Cindy is intelligent and thoughtful, and she listened very, very carefully to what we wanted," he says. "There were a lot of options, and it could have been overwhelming, but she helped us make the right choices." Plus, notes Weiss, "Cindy also helped us with the card that explained the Jewish customs in our ceremony – she knew the exactly appropriate wording to us. Working with Cindy is a great experience; I've since had Noteworthy do all my personal stationery as well." |
